What is NAC?
N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is a supplement form of cysteine an amino acid. It is a precursor of glutathione and is rapidly absorbed by the body compared to glutathione. Once absorbed it is converted into glutathione which is the best anti-oxidant.
It has gotten a lot of attention from the scientific community as a possible treatment and prevention of COVID-19.
Key Features of NAC to Combat COVID-19
Anti-Virus Functions of NAC
NAC inhibits NF-κB. Viruses need NF-κB in order to replicate. NAC has been showed to inhibit influenza as well as other viruses, such as (HIV)[Pubmed 1] and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).[Pubmed 2] NAC has the potential to inhibit COVID-19 because of its ability to negatively regulate NF-κB.
Immune-Modulating Properties
Neutrophils from healthy volunteers taking NAC for 14 days showed lower rates of oxidative burst and chemotaxis. This means that NAC helps the immune system because of the glutathione boost. It scavenges for free radicals and provides anti-aging benefits. Apart form glutathione, it also uses its own anti-oxidative properties to decrease the cellular damage.
NAC Can Reduce the Incidence of Pneumonia
Patients treated with NAC developed significantly less clinically confirmed pneumonia. [PubMed 3]
Evidence
As of this writing there are 11 clinical trials examining NAC for prevention and treatment of COVID.[Indiatimes] Early evidence shows that NAC could be beneficial for COVID-19 patients. [JHSCI]
Orange Orchid Research also filed a patent in the US for Covid-19 treatment using NAC and active compounds in cinnamon. In the said patent a protocol was discussed in helping ease symptoms of COVID-19. Symptoms that were alleviated are fever, chills, shortness of breath, cough, and muscle pain. [Biospace]
Though the studies are in its early stages, we are hopeful that NAC to help combat COVID-19 cases. It is expected to hep avoid lethal complications, as well as other adverse events such as pulmonary and cardiovascular issues. [FASEB]
